Biography

Ryan McGinness, born in 1972, is an artist known for meditative paintings, installations, and screenprints. His work brings a graphic sensibility into a high art context and explores how contemporary iconography can communicate personal meaning. Born in Virginia Beach, VA, McGinness studied fine arts at the Carnegie Mellon University while working as a curatorial assistant at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. Influenced by Pop Art, graphic design, and the Rococo style of the 18th century, McGinness creates fantastical networks of imagery borrowed from corporate logos, plant life, and fairy tales.

His Fabricated Cultural Belief Systems (2003–2004) is a series of 100 unique screenprints that weave together all of these references into seemingly Abstract compositions. Similarly, Under Five Chairs Psychiatrists Wink (2005) is a three-panel acrylic work of graphic motifs that recalls ancient tapestries or mandalas while creating an entirely new visual vocabulary based on modern technology.

McGinness’s work is held in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, California, and the Charles Saatchi Collection, among other institutions.
